Now Reporting from the Frontiers of Science!

April 25th, 2010 · No Comments · Hacking Science, Progress Reports, Research

…or at least from the frontiers of half-baked undergraduate projects.

Beginning this week, I’ll be posting research progress reports any day during which I work on a research project. For the vast majority of humanity, these will be about as exciting as reading the user manual for your printer. However, I have two main motivations for these reports.

A History of Science
One, they’ll serve as a digital record of my research work flow. Months or years from now, I’ll be able to look back and see exactly what I wasted my time and mental efforts on. Beyond boyish nostalgia, this will give me the chance to be more aware of what I spend my time on and perhaps increase my research productivity.

Exercise Those Presentation Muscles
Two, they’ll be good practice for presenting my ideas to others by forcing me to pin down those nebulous thoughts floating around in my head.

Open Up the Discussion
Three, they’ll serve as a public record for collaborators and interested passerbys to see what I’m working on, contribute helpful suggestions, or fling mud.

Note that in order to make it feasible for me to post these reports often, they won’t be the eloquent, highly refined essays (*cough*) you usually find pouring forth from this blog. Expect something closer in form to rushed text message while waiting in line at airport security.

To open science!
